It´s minimalism Monday so today one of my recent hacks to keep my house and thereby my head organized. This may sound like common sense but I start my days so much better when I wake up to an organized house. When the kitchen is still overflowing with yesterday´s dishes and the table in the living room has all kinds of papers on it, my head is also already overflowing from the moment I wake up. Obviously, not the best start of the day and I already stress about the mess before breakfast.
So lately I make an effort to put the toys that are not put away yet in a basket, empty the table in the living room and dedicate 5-10minutes before going to bed to get the kitchen back in order. And these simple habit changes make a big difference for how I start my day. However, confession time, this all works much better when I am home alone. And my dear life partner doesn´t seem to care if the table is overloaded with paperwork, laptops, cables and other stuff, or the floor still has train tracks or Duplo blocks all over the place. It doesn´t impact how he starts his days what the house looks like. But, a colleague gave me a tip for this and seriously, it´s a life changer in our house: a basket or a drawer for the mess makers. As simple as that, just like I have a basket for toys and stuff from L still in the living at the end of the day, you give a basket or a drawer to every household member for their stuff. So now at the end of the day, everything that is still on the table / not in the right place will go into C´s drawer. It´s a drawer with his laptop / cables / headsets / work papers etc. and every clutter that I find but don´t dare to throw away. So now also when he´s not away on work trips I can still have my house and head decluttered to start my days with a calm head. I have to admit it did probably add a small annoyance factor for C but it´s pretty simple: the answer to every “Do you know where this is?” is now: “Yes, in its place, in your drawer” 🙂
