Although living in Spain, even before becoming a mom there was something I fundamentally disagree with in the Spanish culture: the bedtimes of children. I have written about this before but in our house, it´s more of a Northern European schedule where the bichin goes to bed at 7.30pm. (Before it was 7pm but we´re now at 7.30pm which works really good for us).
We didn´t only implement this bedtime because we have our evenings to ourselves now (instead of having your kid up until 10pm and crashing 30min after yourself because you´re just too exhausted) but especially because I am convinced that kids need a lot of sleep. Here in Spain, most people do not seem very convinced of kids needing a lot of sleep so most people around us think we´re crazy for the “German schedule” (their words, not mine) we are having with our bedtime. However, sometimes the bichin even doesn´t make it until 7.30pm because he is just so tired from all his running around the whole day. So I definitely think it´s a good bedtime for him because he is very ready to go to sleep.
However, now that summer is coming, it seems to be more challenging to maintain our bedtime. With the increasing heat, in the common garden of our flat all the other 1, 2 and 3-year-olds where L usually plays with don´t even seem to come out of the house to play outside until 6.30 / 7pm. Yep, the time we are usually already full into our bedtime routine with bath, dinner, reading stories etc.
So this is where my current dilemma starts, what do we do with his bedtime? I don´t mind being a bit flexible with it in the summer months so he can have some time to play outside with his little neighbor friends but I am definitely not prepared to extend his bedtime to 9pm. Not for his sanity, and not for mine. And I am afraid that with the rising temperatures this will only get worse….
