Next up in “I Don´t Know How She Does It” we have Shannon Bennett from Memoirs of a Working Mom. Shannon is one of these moms of whom you wonder how on earth she gets it all done every day. This busy lady works full time, battles a 1,5h commute every morning and evening, and on top of that launched a successful blog this year (which she is totally rocking!). Check out how this inspiring mama manages all of this without going insane.
Q: Please introduce yourself, why do you think people around you might think “I don´t know how she does it”?
A: Hi! I’m Shannon, a full-time working mom of two young girls – ages 2 and 4 – and a wife of 7 years. I’m an HR professional in Corporate America and commute an average of 3 hours per day (1.5 hours each way), which puts me away from home for 12-13 hours per day. Oh and I also blog over at Memoirs of a Working Mom.
Q: What does your typical weekday look like?
A: Oh man. Well, I mentioned above that I’m typically away from home for 12-13 hours per day. My typical day includes my alarm going off at 5:45 am, getting my girls up and ready for the day, dropping them off at their respective childcare locations, driving 1.5 hours to work, sitting through a ton of meetings and answering a ton of emails, driving 1.5-2 hrs home at night and getting home around 8:00 pm when my kids are going to bed. I hang with them for a few minutes, put E to bed, and then fire up my laptop to work on blog and social media stuff until about 1:00 am. Side Note: It’s 11:35 pm as I’m writing this. 🙂
Q: What is your secret to get it all done?
A: I don’t sleep. That’s the secret. I’m a perpetual mombie. I also have a very supportive husband who pulls way more weight than I do at home. I create my blog and social media content on the weekends and then post/promote it during the week.
Q: What do you do when you feel like you´re close to a break down?
A: I escape for awhile to clear my head. Sometimes it’s to shop. Sometimes it’s to Panera to write. Sometimes it’s just to drive.
Q: What is your guilty pleasure?
A: Reality TV! I don’t know that I would consider it to be a guilty pleasure, though, because I don’t feel guilty about it! Ha!
Q: What keeps you motivated?
A: My family, for sure, and all of the amazing support I get from the blogging community! I am driven by accomplishment so as long as I feel like I’m achieving something, I have a reason to keep on.
Q: What is your favourite activity with your girls?
A: Dance parties! We love to put on the music channels on TV and dance in the living room.
Q: What would be your advice for other busy moms to get the most out of their day?
A: Prioritize, eliminate the unnecessary, and multi-task. You can’t do it all, so don’t even try.
Q: What else do we need to know about you?
A: I’m one of the most boring people you’ll ever meet. I entered this crazy blogger life on a whim and have been so grateful for the connections I’ve made. I do what I do because I feel personally rewarded by it… but I’m ALWAYS tired. Life can sometimes a lot harder than it appears on social media. 🙂
