I am super stoked to kick off the “I Don´t Know How She Does It” series with a lady I am greatly admiring and who takes planning to a whole different level. Seriously, when I got in touch with Kelsey my mouth fell open every time I read her updates and learned what she was up to. My guess was that she either never sleeps or her kids must be the biggest nappers in the history because otherwise, I don´t know how she gets it all done. I was already a big fan of time blocking and planning but after joining Kelsey´s e-course Makeover Your Homemaking I even got more serious about it (can definitely recommend this course, you will get so much value out of it!). So, meet Kelsey, a home-schooling mom of 4 (!!!) beautiful girls who, as if homeschooling 4 kids isn´t busy enough, is also running her own business.

Q: Please introduce yourself, why do you think people around you might think “I don´t know how she does it”?
A: Hey there! I’m Kelsey Van Kirk, a 26-year-old wife, homeschooling mama to four daughters, writer, speaker, coach and Founder of The Home Loving Wife. In my experience, the fact that I have so many kids, am home raising and schooling them all day and seem to do so much is what leads to getting asked the question, “How does she do it all?!”
Q: What does your typical weekday look like?
A: A typical weekday for me starts around 5:30am. I roll out of bed, head straight for my office and get cranking on my work for the day. I will work until 8 or 8:30am when I head to get my kids up and ready for the day. We have breakfast, do school, run errands or go play at the YMCA until lunch time, after which we head down for naps around 1:30pm. During nap time I get some work done, tackle housework or take some much-needed “me time” (usually in the form of a nap!) When the kids get up at 3:30 we have a snack, do chores, finish school then I let them have play time while I get dinner ready. We have dinner, start getting ready for bed and enjoy a little family time before tucking the kids in for the night. Depending on the night I will either work for a few hours before bed while my hubby hangs out near me, we will spend time together or I will get out for bible study or an occasional girls’ night.
Q: What is your secret to get it all done? (Seriously, 4 girls, homeschooling, your own business, VA clients…)
A: Honestly, my secret is constant planning, adjustment and being intentional about telling each bit of time I have where it’s going to go. I like to think of time like money – if we don’t have a budget in place that tells our money where it’s going to go, it’s easy for us to let money slip through our fingers and get to the end of the month wondering where it all went. Time is the same. If we don’t tell it where to go in advance, it’s easy to let it slip through our fingers and wonder afterward where it all went!
Q: What do you do when you feel like you´re close to a breakdown?
A: I go back to the basics. I get rid of everything on my plate that isn’t absolutely essential and I focus on keeping myself and my family alive, rested and nourished physically, mentally, spiritually and emotionally. I give myself space, grace and I ask for help where I need it.
Q: What is your guilty pleasure?
A: Binge-reading or watching good books and shows in bed at all hours of the day! Historical fiction novels and shows like Notorious, Mistresses and Pretty Little Liars are my current faves 😉
Q: What keeps you motivated?
A: I strongly believe that God created each of us with amazing gifts and talents to be used to for his glory and to make the world an even more incredible place. I know our time on earth is limited, and I just don’t want to waste any of it! I want to experience it to the fullest, and I find that when I focus on the good I’m doing in other people’s lives, I rarely lose my motivation unless I haven’t been taking care of myself well.
Q: What is your favourite activity with your girls?
A: Oh, that is a tough one! There are so many to choose from. I can’t decide between 3: turning on Taylor Swift and having living room dance parties, getting out in nature and watching them explore the wonder of creation, and snuggling as a family watching a good movie together. Everything with them is so, so sweet.
Q: What would be your advice for other busy moms to get the most out of their day?
A: Take time regularly (monthly, weekly and daily) to map out how you will spend your time. Practice realistically assessing how long various tasks take to complete, and you’ll be better equipped to plan your time effectively! Time blocking is where it’s at!!
Q: What else do we need to know about you?
A: There’s probably a million things I could share about myself, none of which I’m sure you
“need” to know haha 😉 But here’s a few fun things: 1) I met my husband when I was 15 and we eloped just after I turned 19. 2) I was a classically-trained ballet dancer for 11 years. 3) I am an introvert and not a kid person. 4) I have moved over 15 times in my life. 5) I can’t whistle. On a more serious note, my passions lie in inspiring, encouraging and equipping wives and moms to pursue peace, purpose, and joy in their everyday lives. That is the heart behind The Home Loving Wife and why I do what I do. I love connecting with women who are walking the same journey and coming alongside them with support, inspiration, and resources in every season they go through.
