Next up in “I Don´t Know How She Does It” we have Erica from momEplanner. Erica is a full-time working, single mom and is also busy with a side business she started and her blog, what I love about her is that she actually embraces her crazy busy schedule and enjoys it! Check out how this inspiring mama manages all of this without going insane.
Q: Please introduce yourself, why do you think people around you might think “I don´t know how she does it”?
A: Hey guys!!! I am Erica, single mom blogger of an amazing little 5-year-old rascal. Along with being a mom I am also a full-time Program Analyst for the government, Part time wedding and event planner, leader in my church’s youth department, Fiance to my amazing boyfriend, author of an eBook, and much much more.
Q: What does your typical weekday look like?
A: A weekday for me is pretty hectic! I wake up at 5:30 am to shower alone, which is rare. I get my son off to the bus at 7:45 and head straight into work. I spend 8/9 hours on the job, pick up my son by 6 pm and head home to cook him dinner. We start homework and he gets to watch a few shows before it’s bedtime at 8:30 pm and I am usually asleep in his bed at 9 pm. I wake up around 9:30, put a load of clothes in the wash and spend the night talking to my Fiance on the phone until I fall asleep. I must add in that on Wednesdays I am at church for bible study, Once a week I am wedding planning at night or working before bed.
Q: What is your secret to get it all done?
A: There is no secret!! Sorry, cat’s out the bag. I just do it! I love everything I am signed up for. I stay busy and most days I am more tired than I can even explain. But I love it! I have noticed that the fewer hours of sleep the better I am at functioning the next day.
Q: What do you do when you feel like you´re close to a break down?
A: There was a time that I broke down because I really needed some sleep and I was supposed to have a babysitter and she ditched me. I remember that day often because I cried my eyes out. I was literally so tired. There wasn’t much I needed but sleep. Now it’s just easy to think about that day and I tell myself, “you already cried it out, now get up and get moving!” As a single mom, you have no choice! You just have to push. I had my one break down, now I just remind myself of that moment and tell myself you can do it!
Q: What is your guilty pleasure?
A: TV!!!! When I get a weekend to just stay in the house or a day off work, I just sit in front of the TV for the whole day and binge watch. I feel guilty sleeping for some reason, so that’s not always my go to, but Netflix and chill always make me feel rested!
Q: What keeps you motivated?
A: My son. He is the source of my strength. I look at him and know that this is more that he requires. I will always be that soccer mom that is rushing from her 9-5 to get to practice. That’s just the sacrifice you make when you want to be there and you want a career.
Q: What is your favourite activity with your son?
A: My favorite thing to do with Camden is to discover new places. We live in Washington DC and there are so many fun activities right under our noses. My weekends are spent usually just making sure that we are doing something together either alone or as a family.
Q: What would be your advice for other busy moms to get the most out of their day?
A: The one thing that helps me get through my day that you should try is waking up a half an hour before the kids. I mean it might seem like a pain to get up early but the peace of mind is so well worth it. I get up 30 minutes before Camden just to shower and use the bathroom. It really makes all the difference because I can just think and reflect and I use this time to pray and reflect on my day. It really is worth it. I also stay up a little later to do my cleaning. I realized that when I was cleaning while my son was up, I wasn’t at my best. I was cleaning and cooking or cleaning at getting him ready for bed. It was just too much. I work a lot faster when I clean after he’s down and I can hurry up and focus on what I need done and just do it.
Q: What else do we need to know about you?
A: I am just a very fun loving person. I have not fully mastered this working and parenting thing. I just do it! I have learned to say no to things and yes to things I really want to do. Being a mom is my first job, EVERYTHING else comes second. I am getting ready to be a step mom to a handsome 6-year-old next year and I am sure having two children will really add to my schedule but let me tell you a little secret, I CAN’T WAIT!
