When writing about my word for 2017, I already mentioned that I wanted to ditch my phone a bit more and that I bought an old-fashioned alarm clock. Well, that alarm clock has become my new best friend and thanks to this simple chance I am sleeping so much better. Since sleep is not really a commodity for us moms this has really been a game changer for me.
By not taking my phone into the bedroom anymore when I go to bed automatically some changes happened that had a huge impact on how well I rest:
- No more getting lost in Facebook land
We have all been there right, just checking Facebook (or Instagram) quickly before going to sleep, only to find ourselves an hour later still scrolling. Huge time sucker! And often the cause we go to sleep much later than we had originally planned for. Since I leave my phone in the living these days, this can´t happen anymore. When I go to bed, I go to bed without much distraction.
- No more blue light
Instead of reading on my phone I am now reading actual books before going to sleep. Usually, I am so tired that it´s just a few pages but hey, some reading gets done but without the negative impact of blue light.
- No more checking messages when I wake up during the night
Usually, when I woke up during the night to pee or take a sip of water I would use my phone to check the time. But, if I then saw some Whatsapp notifications it was very easy to just get in and see what had come in, reply to some messages etc. Not good for sleeping! Thanks to my old-school alarm I still know the time but it´s much easier to go back to sleep without the temptation or distraction that a phone on the night stand brings.
- No more always available
By deliberately putting my phone away and in a different room, it´s much easier to really disconnect and rest. I don´t check my work email anymore before going to sleep (no idea why I was doing that anyway since obviously it is the stupidest thing you can when you want to rest) and don´t reply to messages anymore after 10pm (well, who am I kidding, sometimes even 9pm because I am just sooo exhausted).
Besides falling asleep easier and sleeping better, not having the phone close when you wake up also ensures a much more relaxed way of getting up. There is no rush to check messages, emails, Facebook or the news because the phone is simply too far away so we get up calmly (as far as you can get up calmly with a toddler around) and have our breakfast before I start looking for my old friend the phone again.
It has been almost a month that my phone got abandoned from my bedroom and seriously, best decision ever! (Next step will be to ditch the hubs´ phone as well, he still reads everything in Kindle so I think it´s time to get him an e-reader)
