This post was sponsored by Verhuisbedrijf Utrecht but, as always, all opinions are 100% my own.
You have just signed that contract and happily walk outside with the keys of your new palace in your hand. However, let´s see how long that happiness lasts when you realize how much work moving actually is! You might have thought you don´t own so many things, but during a move you usually realize how much crap stuff you actually have.
It has already been 6 months ago that we moved to our new home and I still feel like so much still needs to get done! In two of three bedrooms, there are no curtains yet, there are still some boxes packed in the basement, and the furniture for the bathroom has just been placed last week. Moving is not something you just do, but you can make it yourself a bit easier!
After our move, these are my 3 tips to make moving a little easier:
- Give yourself some grace
This took a while for me to realize. When we got the key to our new place, I was of the opinion that everything had to be finished in 2 days and should also look as if we had been living there for years already with all the decoration etc. Yeah right…. Unless you have some days (or weeks) off kids and off work, it´s just not realistic and with 1 baby and 2 full-time jobs that obviously didn´t happen. So I really had to make clear to myself that not everything had to be finished immediately, that curtains are not urgent because we have blinds on the outside of every window. Those naked lightbulbs might be ugly, but they do their job. Get your priorities straight and when the most important things are done, give yourself some grace, the rest will also come.
- Make a list
I am a big fan of lists, so I tend to make lists for everything. Some get finished quickly, other have a longer lifetime (those curtains are still on my moving list). We used different types of list, one with admin stuff (e.g. changing your address, transferring phone and internet connections etc.), one with things we had to buy (there they are again…the curtains), and a huge one divided over the different rooms. Good preparation is key so make sure you have an extensive moving checklist.
- Let professionals do the heavy lifting
Oftentimes we think that using a moving company is very expensive and that´s why we prefer to do it ourselves with the help of family and friends. However, it doesn´t have to be that expensive and seriously, it will make your life so much easier with some professional movers instead of driving 15x back and forth with your uncle´s van (also a lot better for your back btw!).
What are your best moving tips?
